After defecting to the United States, he started Vought International to make money from his new Compound V serum. The Compound was able to activate some latent powers, but the science wasn’t exact. There was always an unknown mental element that dictated what genes were activated. The earlier in life the serum was administered, the better the results, since that mental element became less of a factor. The most common abilities activated are super strength, speed, agility, healing, intelligence, and longevity.

The most powerful supes were ones like Homelander, bred in a test tube with Compound V directly injected into the embryo. His style of superhero possesses immortality. Although on the streaming show, only the original V-One does this. It was scrapped due to only working on a handful of people, such as Homelander’s father, Soldier Boy. In the real Boys world, Compound V indeed doesn’t work on everyone. This includes any sufficiently weakened health state, including advanced age. For others, there’s no known reason. For those, it simply does nothing or straight-up legit murders them!

What Happens To The Real Homelander?

Homelander’s quest on the show is to get V-One to become immortal and ascend to pseudo-godhood so he can take over the planet. In The Boys Parallel Universe, he’s trying to find the fabled Patient Zero. A natural superhuman whose blood was the prototype ingredient for Compound V. In actuality, Patient Zero was thought to be a Demigod. Apparently, various scientific notes found in Fredrick Vought’s journal indicate that someone born of Compound V, like Homelander, ingesting the blood would actually have the potential to ascend to higher-dimensional godhood. Certainly, they could easily take over the entire Earth! Most likely an even better candidate would be Homelander’s son Ryan who was naturally born with superpowers.

In that Parallel Universe, Homelander battles the Demigod while managing to ingest some of his blood during the epic battle. Amazingly, Homelander lasers his head clean off, causing the Demigod to vaporize and ascend to afterlife godhood. That’s when a bolt of supernatural lightning hits Homelander, thus temporarily weakening him. No doubt, it was the Father God of the Demigod doling out a punishment! That’s when Billy Butcher and the Boys, his estranged son Ryan, and his dad, Soldier Boy, show up. They beat the ever-loving hell out of an already weakened Homelander. His dad, Soldier Boy, then uses his super-depowering blast on him. Everyone thinks Homelander is dead until he bursts up screaming and flies away at super speed!

Not long after, he feels himself losing power and crash-lands in the middle of a Homelander protest march amid rabid Starlighters. His original intent was to kill everyone in the crowd, but it backfired! The mad mob begins beating Homelander, but he manages to barely push them away while running for his life! He screams for help, crying with no power left in him. The mob catches up, ready to kill him, but police and the military intervene. He’s been tried in several different courts, including the International Criminal Court for Crimes Against Humanity! Homelander, aka John Boy Homelander, ends up as inmate #666 in a supermax prison serving several life sentences. Interestingly enough, he lost all his powers except for the immortality. Although he is still somewhat superhuman. Enough to hold his own against violent prisoners but not a whole mob of them!
